Sugar and Slavery in the Caribbean

Recall that approximately 400,000 enslaved persons traveled from Africa to what would become the United States. The United States was the only slave society in which that population increased naturally (to 4,000,000). How did the "manufacture" of sugar play a role in this forced migration?
